Description
Arguably the most famous archaeological site in South America, the Inca city of Machu Picchu sits high on a ridge above the Urubamba River not far from Cusco. Probably built during the reign of the Inca Pachacutec in the 15th century, it was never found by the Spanish and remained unknown outside the local area until the arrival of the American explorer Hiram Bingham in 1911. This image shows typical Inca houses in the Residential Sector with rainy season storm clouds over the Urubamba Canyon in the background.
