Description
Mountain worship was a very important part of Inca religion. Like many other indigenous people of the Andes they believed the apus or mountain spirits lived on the high peaks. This small hilltop temple called Inti Punku ("Sun Gate") above the Sacred Valley near Ollantaytambo, Peru obviously had ceremonial significance. The peak is Mt. Veronica (or Wakay Willca, "Sacred Tears" in Quechua), at 5893m / 19,334ft the highest peak in the Cordillera Urubamba range, which is not far from Cusco.
