Description
This fascinating little cemetery along with the mine workings is about all that is left of Milluni, a Bolivian village near La Paz that used to be an important tin mining centre. The mine was abandoned in the 1990s; with the rise in mineral prices it has been partially reopened by a cooperative in the last few years. Among the tombs are monuments dedicated to events of May 1965, when many miners were killed in clashes with the army during nationwide protests against the military dictatorship that ruled Bolivia at the time. The mountain in the background is Huayna Potosi (6088m / 19,975ft), a popular peak with climbers.
