Description
A close up of the channels, terraces and pools that are found at Las Salineras near Maras, not far from Cusco in Peru. The terraces are used to extract salt by evaporation - saturated salty water from a nearby spring is directed through channels into hundreds of shallow pools as it flows down the valley. The terraces have been used since Inca times and locals still collect salt in this way today. The white deposits next to the channels are also salt.
