Description
A close up of some of the channels and pools are found at Las Salineras near Maras, not far from Cusco in Peru. The pools are used to extract salt by evaporation - saturated salty water from a nearby spring is directed through channels into hundreds of shallow pools as it flows down the valley. The white deposits alongside the channels is salt. The terraces have been used since Inca times and locals still collect salt in this way today. This image was taken in the rainy season when the pools are full of sediment; in the dry season which is when the salt is collected they are much whiter.
