An Aymara man holds up his hands to receive the sun's energy on the June 21st winter solstice in Tiwanaku, Bolivia's most famous archaeological site. The date has long been an important one for the indigenous people of the Andes; it is the shortest day of the year in the southern hemisphere and also marked the end of one agricultural cycle and the start of preparations for a new planting season. In Aymara the festival is known as Willkakuti (literally "Return of the Sun") and sunrise marks the start of the Aymara New Year. Tiwanaku was from 400-1000AD the capital of the most powerful empire in South America. The statue in the background is the Ponce Monolith, one of several impressive carved stone monuments at the site.
