Description
The Virgen del Carmen is celebrated in many villages in Latin America on July 16th. One of the most famous festivals takes place in Paucartambo, a small village in the Andes near Cusco, Peru. Celebrations last for several days and feature many spectacular costumes and masks, which are often parodies of the Spanish colonisers. These are Kapac Negro dancers, who represent salves brought over to work in plantations (especially sugar) in the tropical lowlands.
