Description
Over 300 species of orchid have been recorded along the Inca Trail and in the Machu Picchu Sanctuary in Peru. This is Epidendrum secundum, which comes in various colour forms and is one of the commonest. Its local Quechua name "winay wayna" means "forever young" as it flowers pretty much all year round; an Inca site on the Inca Trail is named after it. It is also common in the montane forests and cleared areas in neighbouring Andean countries as well as Peru.
