Description
A Hudsonian whimbrel (Numenius hudsonicus) models obligingly on a barnacle-covered rock on the Pacific coast of northern Chile. Now officially declared a separate species from its Eurasian cousin, they breed in the Arctic tundras of Canada and Alaska and migrate south to escape the harsh northern winter. Outside the breeding season they can be found on the coasts of much of South America and southern North America. They are very similar to the Eurasian whimbrel but lack the triangular white rump of that species.
