Description
These spectacular and unusual channels, terraces and pools are found at Las Salineras near Maras, not far from Cusco in Peru. They are used to extract salt by evaporation - saturated salty water from a nearby spring is directed through channels into hundreds of shallow pools as it flows down the valley. The terraces have been used since Inca times and locals still collect salt in this way today. It is I think one of the most interesting trips in the Cusco area and excellent for photography. This image was taken in the rainy season when the pools are full of sediment; the almost look like a giant paintbox of all shades of yellows and browns. In the dry season which is when the salt is collected they are much whiter.
